Email Marketing and Reading Panes
Whether you use Microsoft Outlook, Gmail, Mozilla Thunderbird, or any other email application, you probably have a set way you like to view incoming messages. Most email applications allow you to customize a variety of settings, but probably the most important that impacts email marketers is the reading pane. Personally, I have my reading pane at the bottom (I’m using Microsoft Outlook 2007) at about 50% of the email application window. This allows me to see about 14 emails in a list and a decent amount of the selected email.
After trekking around the office I discovered that the other men in the office had their email applications set up the same way, with the reading pane at the bottom. The women mainly had their reading panes open to the right and very small, or not open at all. Most said that they preferred to see all emails and then view an email on a full screen.
Perhaps we’ll take this survey on the road, but going by our local results, and using Alexa’s website demographic tools, perhaps an email marketing campaign can be custom fitted for a specific type of email user. I find that emailed advertisements that match up with my reading pane size catch my attention more than those that don’t.
Curious as we are, we want to hear how your email is set up.
